The Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary is an ancillary organization of law
enforcement officers. The Auxiliary is the only national support organization of
its kind.
The Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary was organized to unite families of
members of the Fraternal Order of Police; to promote their welfare socially,
morally and intellectually; and to encourage them in all things pertaining to
their good.
In 1920, a group of wives of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania police officers
gathered to discuss issues concerning their husbands and their jobs. This was
the birth of the first "FOP Ladies Auxiliary. "In 194l, Kathryn M. Milton became
the first national president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Since that time the
Auxiliary has grown to over 4,000 members in 184 subordinate auxiliaries
representing 28 states.
In 1985, membership eligibility that originally allowed only females as
members was extended to. family members (18 years of age or older) of any member
of the Fraternal Order of Police. In I987, the name of the organization was
changed dropping the word "Ladies" to reflect the growth in membership of the
organization.
National Peace Officer's Memorial Day Service
Although President John F Kennedy proclaimed May l5th as National Peace
Officers' Memorial Day in 1962, it wasn't until the Auxiliary sponsored and
planned the first National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service that any
national effort was exerted to remember the line of duty deaths inflicted on
those who serve the law enforcement profession. The. first Annual Memorial
Service was held in Washington, DC on May 15, l982, with approximately 125
people attending. This May 15th, the Grand Lodge Auxiliary of the Fraternal
Order of Police, together with the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police,
memorialized 130 officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice at our l6th Annual
Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service. It is estimated that 15,000 police
officers, survivors, families and friends gathered on the steps of the United
States Capitol Building to hear President William Jefferson Clinton praise their
fellow officers who will never be forgotten.
The National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial
The FOP Auxiliary is the ONLY law enforcement support organization that
provided seed money to the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Fund,
and in return holds a seat on the Board of Directors of this fund. After
six years of dedicated effort by all of law enforcement, a memorial honoring all
of law enforcement's sacrifices was completed in I991. The National Law
Enforcement Officers' Memorial is located in Washington, DC, our Nation's
Capital.
Legislative Issues The Grand Lodge FOP Auxiliary is very interested and
active in any legislative issues that affect police officers and their families.
Our Legislative Committee is responsible for advising members when a particular
Bill or issue that will have supportive or adverse impact is presented Auxiliary
members are encouraged to respond to our Congressmen and Senators regarding
pending legislation.
Service/Charity Projects The Grand Lodge FOP Auxiliary and our subordinate
auxiliaries have become very active in community projects and charities. Our
number one charity is Easter Seals. Each year our auxiliaries hold many events
and donate many working hours to raising money for Easter Seals which is
reported each year on the national telethon. This year the members of the
Auxiliary raised $96, 000. for our donation.
Critical Incident Response Service
It is not possible to know what devastating incidents may lie in our
immediate future, or when one of our brothers or sisters may need our
assistance, but it is our hope that through the training and planning of this
service, we will be able to respond to those needs. The Grand Lodge Auxiliary is
in the process of developing a service to provide information and assistance to
those members who are interested in this area.
Scholarship Fund
In memory of Kathryn Milton, first National President of the Auxiliary,
educational grants are awarded annually to dependent children 25 years of age or
under, or to a member of the Auxiliary, to pursue their education.
